Why You Need An Ultrasound
You’d think a positive pregnancy test would be all you’d need to make a decision about your unplanned pregnancy. But there’s so much more to know.
The only way to get the additional information is with an ultrasound. An ultrasound exam will tell you if:
Your Pregnancy Is Viable
A viable pregnancy means you haven’t miscarried and your pregnancy is growing normally.
You Have The Correct Date
It’s important to know, as closely as possible, the date you got pregnant.
Your Pregnancy Is Located Correctly
Some pregnancies develop outside of the uterus, in the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy). An ultrasound can help your health care provider detect if the baby is in the right location.
What Is An Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses the echoes from high-frequency sound waves to produce a picture of the inside of your uterus. A technician will first apply a gel-like substance on your abdomen and rub a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel.
From the echoes of the sound waves, an image is formed on a computer screen. The technician will point out what you’re seeing and listen for a viable heartbeat.
