What Is Adoption?

Adoption is the legal placement of a child with people who will raise him or her as their own. The child becomes permanently and legally part of the adoptive family, with full rights to inheritance and a lifetime family relationship.

Types of Adoption Plans

A while back, people referred to adoption as “giving away” your baby. Nothing could be further from the truth.

When you choose to place your child for adoption, you make a plan. This is an important decision and as the birth couple, you can choose exactly what you want for your child. There are three different adoption plans.

Open Adoption

If you want ongoing contact with your child, you would choose an open adoption plan. With this plan, you and the adoptive couple you choose will exchange full names, addresses, and phone numbers. You’ll have direct contact with one another.

Closed Adoption

When birth parents feel having no contact would be best for them to move on, they choose a closed adoption plan. The original birth certificate is sealed and your identities remain completely private.

Semi-Open Adoption

This plan is a mixture of the other two. You exchange first names with the adoptive couple but no other identifying information is given. All contact goes through a third party like the agency or adoption specialist you choose.

How Do I Know Adoption Is Right For Me?

Adoption is a difficult decision to make. It takes strength and courage to do what you believe to be right. Putting the child’s welfare in front of your feelings is a true act of love.

Selecting adoption may be the most loving and hard option you can choose. The more you know about the process, plans, and timeline, the more comfortable you’ll feel. We can offer referrals for reputable agencies, lawyers, and other adoption specialists you can talk to. Contact us.
